why church?

my jesus family- cake after church

Why write a book about church to share with little ones?

Going to Church is so often a struggle. It can feel hard work when our kids are small (or not so small!), loud, fidgety, fast, uncooperative, perhaps unaware of social expectations, perhaps overloaded by all the sensory input around them, and lets face it… always very noticeable! We can feel uncomfortable, judged even, and sometimes unwelcome – like we don’t fit. We also worry that if we  keep on persuading our kids to come, that perhaps they will grow up not choosing to go to church at all.

Church isn’t just about going to church though, the Bible teaches us much more about being church together, that church is family, God’s family! And it’s him who welcomes us into it through Jesus.

How blessed is God! And what a blessing he is! He’s the Father of our Master, Jesus Christ, and takes us to the high places of blessing in him. Long before he laid down earth’s foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love. Long, long ago he decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ. (What pleasure he took in planning this!) He wanted us to enter into the celebration of his lavish gift-giving by the hand of his beloved Son.

(Ephesians 1:5 MSG)

I really want to share that amazing truth with my little ones, what an exciting and wonderful thing to be part of! It’s a happy-ending-love-story we are invited into!

Little ones (and their parents!) need to know that this is what church is. Church is family. I think it really changes how we view it, and how we feel – especially when it’s uncomfortable or difficult, or Sunday simply seems to be one of those days, …because family in it’s truest sense is a given, and a gift – we were made for it & it was made for us!
