Lent 1 with ‘My Easter Egg Hunt’: Easter gifts

What does the word ‘Lent’ mean for our children? What does it mean for us?

Sometimes it feels rather meaningless as a Mum with little ones, and all their needs in tow. It’s the space between pancake day and Easter eggs! Perhaps thinking of it as space is quite helpful though; space to think, space to explore and play, space to run, space to get ready… ready to celebrate the amazing truths of the Easter story.

In reality it is, practically speaking, no more actual free time or space than usual. There are all the family demands and needs, all the usual lack of energy, sleep & time I can choose what to do with! But I’m determinedly ┬ácarving out a space in my thinking from now till Easter, to be intentional about making time & space for one activity & some chat each week (that’s all!) with my children & with God, about all that Good Friday, and Easter Sunday means.

So, as soon as pancakes have been enjoyed, I am planning to make some Easter gifts with my three…

Doesn’t sound hard – though I know it will be – & I know I’m going to have to keep telling myself I don’t need to beat myself up when it doesn’t happen!

hands on!

Making Easter gifts

My three love making things; baking, painting, simple sewing & sticking, papier-mache, modelling clay, threading beads… What do yours like to do, what could be made to be wrapped as a present for someone for Easter?

I have drawn some Easter themed gift tags you can print out, colour & use.

Wondering together

  • what do we remember from Easter last year?
  • which parts of Easter do we like or dislike?
  • how do we feel about Easter?

ready to read!

Reading & reflecting

Read the opening pages of ‘My Easter Egg Hunt’. Phoebe is making Easter gifts for friends and family. She is talking to her Mum about how she feels about Easter… does she feel the same as we do? Imagine what she might find out from Granny.

Practice pancakes

No excuse needed, we ‘practiced’ pancakes (as if we needed to!) for our tea tonight in preparation for Shrove Tuesday – next week!

I gathered a whole heap of random, delicious fruit, syrups, yogurts and T helped me mix some pancake batter (with added cocoa and some red food colouring because B fancied red velvet pancakes)…totally delicious!

I have also been enjoying gathering together the resources I want to use to go through lent with ‘My Easter Egg Hunt’ finding out why Jesus died and why it’s good news. Can’t wait to share them with you.

We’ll start next week!

Still just enough time to get hold of a copy to share as a family during lent.

25 days & counting…

It’s 25 days till the start of lent…

I’m always full of good intentions to include my children in getting ready for Easter but never find it easy to get organised. There are some great resources available that can help us as families to get hands-on, and to focus us on prayer and acts of kindness – and there’s still time to order something! Although there are many, this year, we especially like:

good friday my easter egg huntThis year I also want to spend some time with mine thinking about why Jesus died, and I wondered if you would like to join me…

So each week of lent I will post resources that we can use. Printable crafts and activities, questions to think about together and a prayer to carry us and our little ones through lent to the celebration of Easter – all based on ‘My Easter Egg Hunt’.

You won’t need to have a copy of ‘My Easter Egg hunt’, but of course if you would like one, there’s still time to order one here before we begin!

Are you in? …
